Why Triangle Students Train North of the City

Fredrickson Aviation is based at Person County Airport (KTDF) in Timberlake, NC — about 30 minutes north of Durham and 30 minutes from Raleigh. That distance is a feature, not a footnote.

At KTDF you fly in Class E airspace with a short, uncongested traffic pattern. You take off when you're ready. There's no holding for a regional jet, no extended downwind to sequence behind a charter, no 20-minute taxi. More of your Hobbs time is spent flying the maneuvers that build skill and move you toward your certificate.

Busy Class C airports like RDU impose real costs on student pilots: extended patterns, ATC workload that's appropriate for an airline operation but steep for someone working on steep turns, and Hobbs time that accumulates whether the airplane is moving or waiting on a runway hold-short. Training at a quieter field means more landings per hour and a faster path through the syllabus.

Many of our students drive out once or twice a week and train in focused blocks. Out-of-area students from Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill often book consecutive training days and finish a rating in a single trip. Either way, the drive takes less time than waiting for a pattern slot at a busy field.

Our Strongest Differentiator

Guaranteed Checkride Dates

Your DPE checkride date is scheduled before your first lesson. Not "we'll figure it out when you're ready" — a confirmed date on the calendar at enrollment. This matters because examiner backlogs at busy flight schools regularly add weeks, sometimes months, to the end of a training program. Students complete the syllabus and then wait. We remove that variable entirely. When you finish your training, your examiner is already booked. For career-changers working against a timeline, or anyone who has already taken time off work to train, that certainty is worth more than any other single thing we offer.

Private Pilot

The private pilot certificate is the foundation of everything that follows. Our accelerated program is built around structured, daily flying — not weekend lessons stretched across a year. A DPE checkride date is confirmed before you start.

Instrument Rating

The instrument rating makes you a safer, more capable pilot and opens the door to flying in real weather. We train one-on-one with a full IFR syllabus in actual and simulated conditions. Checkride guaranteed at enrollment.

Commercial Pilot

The commercial certificate is the first step toward flying for pay. Our program covers the maneuvers, the cross-country requirements, and the aeronautical knowledge you need to pass. We keep the training moving at a professional pace.

Multi-Engine Rating

Multi-engine training happens in-house in our Beechcraft Baron — not farmed out to another school. You get Baron time logged in your logbook, with an instructor who knows the airplane, on a checkride timeline we control.

CFI & CFII

The CFI and CFII certificates let you build flight hours while teaching. Our program is intensive and hands-on, with a focus on the oral exam knowledge and flight maneuver standards that examiners actually test. DPE date secured at enrollment.

Ground School Boot Camp

An intensive oral exam prep course delivered over Zoom. Our Boot Camp holds a 90% oral pass rate, including the CFI initial — one of the hardest checkrides in aviation. Covers the knowledge areas examiners probe most.

Train On Current Aircraft

Our Fleet

Students train on three Cessna 172s, a Piper PA-28 Warrior, and a Beechcraft Baron. The Baron is the reason multi-engine training stays in-house. Most schools have to send students elsewhere for twin-engine time. We don't. Your multi-engine instructor knows your background, your logbook, and the airplane — because it's the same team you've trained with from the start.

Industry Recognition

Recognized by AOPA

Fredrickson Aviation was named an AOPA Distinguished Flight School in 2025 through the Flight Training Experience Awards. The award is based on student feedback collected directly by AOPA — not a self-nomination. It reflects what students who trained here reported about their experience. We mention it once because it's relevant. The work that earned it is what we show up to do every day.
